A PAR­LIA­MEN­TARY Stand­ing Com­mit­tee re­port has said that to­bacco cul­ti­va­tion is not just harm­ful for hu­man health but also for the en­vi­ron­ment. In its re­port, Ef­fects of To­bacco Cur­ing on En­vi­ron­ment and Health, pre­sented re­cently in the Ra­jya Sabha, the com­mit­tee is not only de­stroy­ing forests but also con­tribut­ing to the green­house ef­fect." To­bacco cur­ing is the dry­ing of to­bacco leaves with wood fire to de­prive them of choloro­phyll. The com­mit­tee rec­om­mended an en­vi­ron­men­tal im­pact as­sess­ment of to­bacco cul­ti­va­tion to know its harm­ful ef­fects on en­vi­ron­ment. POINT
