Is­lands of ex­tinc­tion

A GLOBAL pat­tern is emerg­ing link­ing species ex­tinc­tion to the con­struc­tion of hy­dropower dams. Re­searchers stud­ied 200 is­lands cre­ated by the con­struc­tion of large dams across the world said these reser­voirs do not main­tain the same lev­els of an­i­mal and plant life found prior to flood­ing. These is­lands un­dergo sus­tained loss of species ev­ery year af­ter dam con­struc­tion, a pat­tern oth­er­wise known as 'ex­tinc­tion debt'. Bi­o­log­i­cal Con­ser­va­tion, July
