Tamil Nadu gets India's first green rail corridor
UNION MINISTER for Railways Suresh Prabhu has inaugurated India's first green rail corridor between Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram and Manamadurai towns. All trains originating and terminating at Rameswaram have been fitted with bio-toilets. Altogether, 563 bio-toilets have been fitted in 149 coaches handled by the station. Developed by the Railways and the Defence Research and Development Organisation, bio-toilets collect human waste in tanks and decompose the waste using specialised bacteria, ensuring zero discharge on tracks. The corridor is part of the Railways' plan to contribute to the Centre's Swachh Bharat campaign. The Railways plans to provide bio-toilets in coaches across India by September 19, 2019. Till June this year, it has already provided 40,750 bio-toilets.
