Disease index

Down to Earth - - SCIENCE -

A STUDY of over 4,000 monozygotic Swedish twins has revealed that while a high body mass index was not associated with increased risk of heart attack or death for the heavier twin, it was associated with increased risk for the onset of diabetes. Monozygotic twins are genetically identical so they provide a unique tool for evaluating risks associated with obesity, independent of genetic factors. The findings suggest that weight loss can lower the risk of diabetes. JAMA Internal Medicine, August 1
