This staircase in an affluent house in Kolkata is made with terracotta tiles, gypsum and granite, and is built without shuttering. It follows the Catalan method of vaulting, in which the tiles are held on their thin edge by the instant hardening of gypsum (plaster of Paris). This creates a thin shell that gives support to subsequent tile layers, laid either in gypsum or with slow-hardening binders like lime or cement, which are cheaper and more water-resistant. These can be used in contemporary projects, and even in commercial projects
