Re­cent re­ports in­di­cate that at least 34 farm­ers in Ma­ha­rash­tra's Vi­darbha in re­gion have died due to in­cor­rect use of pes­ti­cides and lack of pro­tec­tive gear. Cur­rently, a cen­tral team is as­sist­ing in the probe. Eleven years ago, Down To Earth had noted that "farm­ers can save crops with­out pes­ti­cides. And they can earn more in the ("No Pes­ti­cides", May 31, 2006 farm­ers and gov­ern­ment still think that the op­po­site is true.
