Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT -

THE GUJARAT forest department has begun an investigation into allegations against godman Morari Bapu after pictures of him sitting within metres of an Asiatic Lion went viral on social media. The pictures were taken within the protected limits of the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary near Junagadh in Saurashtra. The forest department is examining the permissions sought by Bapu for the traditional Girnar parikrama (circumambulation of the Girnar hill in the area) which passes through the Girnar Sanctuary. The department had apparently given permission for only certain portions of the route. It was trying to involve Bapu in a campaign against plastic pollution along the parikrama route. Instead, a few members of his entourage took the controversial photographs. In August 2016, Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja had to pay a fine of `20,000 for taking a selfie with lions at Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, an act strictly prohibited by law.
