The inspiring journey of Chetan Shah, MD of Xpress Computers and founding chairman of ASIRT, who defeated critical ailment and created a record of cycling to world’s highest motorable pass in Ladakh, instigated the audience to come out of their comfort zones and stretch their inner strengths in the knowledge packed SP Summit held recently at Kolkata.

Talking about his journey on the two wheels, Shah not only inspired the audience, but appealed them to look at life with a different approach. Suffered from a painful ailment, Shah talked about how cycling brought drastic changes in his life and how it became a game changer for him. Riding to the highest road in the world He quoted that, In February 2015, he registered for the Manali Khardungla Cycling championship 2015 to be held from 26 July to 4th Aug. This was the ultimate challenge for any cyclist as we would be riding from an altitude of 9000 ft to 18380 ft, a distance of over 500 kms in 9 days.

He had to face a lot of resistance from my family, take approvals from my doctors & undergo stress tests to prove my fitness levels. It was almost unthinkable for most people that a person with history of a Knee replacement & a heart bypass could manage to do this extremely tough & arduous cycling expedition at such altitudes.

Meanwhile I used the 5 months before the event to prepare as best as I could. Doing steep climbs, long endurance rides & undergoing a brief cycle training program as well. Finally the D day arrived. I left for the expedition on 24th July 2015 with so much determination, hope & a prayer in my mind.

As someone who had undergone a heart bypass surgery with 5 grafts, a knee replacement & a brain tumour surgery with hearing in left ear removed & a critical balancing nerve cut, This expedition to the top of the world should be a lesson to many such patients that the sky is the limit when it comes to achieving goals. Their mind & willpower can help them shatter preset limits and go beyond boundaries.
