Sunil Gupta, Alsun System

Over a decade in distribution of IT Products and offering total IT solutions to SOHO, SME & enterprise segments in the national capital region of Delhi, Sunil Gupta from Alsun Systems started his company in 1990 with meager resources including a hired system for software development, its current annual turn-over exceeds `1.8 billion (approx 40 million USD). The organization is managed by a group of four highly qualified & specialized entrepreneurs, Alok Jain, Sunil Gupta, Anil Kumar Jain & Pankaj Gupta, each specializing in their fields like management, marketing, finance, & servicing respectively.

Born & brought up in well-to-do middle class Gupta family, Sunil was always a top ten student during school days. Then after, he did his graduation & PG diploma in Computers.

EARLY DAYS

Talking about his early days of his company, he started his career in 1990 with his friend & neighbor Alok Jain with a project from CDAC, Pune, which was looking for a solution to transliterate names of the persons in English to Indian Languages automatically in Computers. This was supposed to be a tough job for him, considering English is a non-phonetic language. He prepared a database comprising of all the names & surnames existing in the telephone directories of all Metro cities, and entered their corresponding names in Hindi/ Devnagri. This way, whenever a name was typed in English, the computer was instructed to look that name in the database & pop-up the corresponding name in the Indian language.

Alok Gupta, Director, Alsun Systems said, “Me along with Alok, were soon fascinated with the wide scope of usage of computers in Indian Languages, which we thought was a bottleneck to a wider use of computers, because most of Indians didn’t understand Computers & English, at that point of time.

“This is how we started our company “AL(ALOK) SUN(SUNIL) SYSTEMS” to promote usage of Indian languages in the computers”, he added.

Soon, He became the distributors for Vernacular Computing products of CDAC to promote the “GIST” Technology, developed by them, enabling the computers to work in Indian Languages.

Talking about his professional achievements from a meager capital of Rs.10000/- in the year 1991 & only one employee & now to a turnover approx. 30 Crores, it had always been a roller coaster ride. Alsun takes pride in informing the readers, that they have successfully completed 25 Years, in the IT industry.

Alsun had successfully translated (and published) Delhi Telephone Directory from English to Hindi using computerized tools, which consisted of three volumes into Hindi, in a record time of two months.

Also, Alsun were first few, to get a contract from Election Commission, to computerize Electoral Rolls & convert them to Hindi. Company had distributed the Hardware Solutions to various vendors authorized by Election commission to print Voter-ID Cards. Company had been distributing most of the IT products ranging from Floppies to High end Workstations & Servers. Then after, they came out with a technical magazine called “PIXELS”, which showcased & compared latest IT technological products.

Today, Alsun is one of a major Distributor of Power Condition Equipments i.e. Exide Batteries, APC, Microtek & Lumionus UPS in entire Delhi NCR. Also they had been associated with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, for more than 20 years, in providing them with latest IT products & solutions.

“We are also a SI, Security & Surveillance solution providers etc. to various verticals of the country i.e. Education sector, Hospitals, Hospitality, Call Centers, Banks etc. Our strength has always been 50-50 ratio of distribution (distributing products) and endcustomers (providing customers complete solutions) ranging from Government Organizations, PSUs, Corporate, SOHO etc. Our achievement was also recognized by Cyber Media, by conferring “Best Reseller (Silver)” in 2009”, Sunil Gupta expressed.

CHALLENGES AND ROADBLOCKS

Alsun was later joined by Anil Jain, who was C.A. and Alok’s Uncle and then Pankaj, who was an engineer & was also Sunil’s younger brother. But at a later stage, the decision making became lethargic and company couldn’t touch the heights which they deserved and ultimately all members departed in own paths, for the good.

“We had some great moments of success, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We worked in tandem. All four of us, worked hard & tried to do the best job, defined by ourselves. Whatever little Alsun achieved, it is all because of joint efforts of all of us. I would like to use this opportunity to thank everybody who had supported ALSUN, in any way” he added.

SUCCESS MANTRA

Sunil has only one success mantra & policy in my life i.e. sheer hard work and hard work, with a focus on the job to be completed i.e. satisfaction of the customer is ultimate goal. He had always been a man behind the curtain, silently doing the job entrusted for him. This is what has made him popular amongst dedicated list of customers, who are relieved from any worry after entrusting their problem/ Job, because they know that Alsun, will do the needful irrespective of what may come.

ADVICE TO YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS?

“Hard Work, Dedication & focus on your goals, is only the way to succeed. Understanding the problems & providing the best technological solutions, will always make your customers happy & satisfied and in-turn they will keep coming back to you again & again, bringing more & more business and revenue” he expressed.

PERSONAL LIFE/HOBBIES

According to him, Sunil is fortunate to have a loving and caring wife, Sunita. For him, his children are the strength. He also expressed that during his free time, he try and love to spend quality time with family. He is a fun loving guy and loves struck to himself in TV, looking current affairs, movies in his relax time.

FUTURE PLANS

Alsun are trying to focus on the introduction of more & more such products wherein company can add valued expertise to these products in terms of complete solution, be it Hardware, software, after-sales service or support, to the customers, so that customers can focus on their key areas of their business, leaving their Complete IT need for the company, for the fulfillment. According to his views, Sunil’s personal goal in life is to keep himself happy and also keep everybody happy around.
