In­dian Met­als & Ferro Al­loys Ltd (IMFA), a fully in­te­grated pro­ducer of ferro chrome, re­cently re­placed an ex­ist­ing 550-amp ca­pac­ity con­duc­tor in a 132kV grid line with an 800-amp ca­pac­ity HTLS (high ten­sion low sag) con­duc­tor thereby en­abling much higher power trans­mis­sion. Such re­place­ment of con­duc­tor is be­lieved to have been done for the first time in Odisha. San­jeev Das, in an in­ter­ac­tion with Venu­gopal Pil­lai, tells us more on this sig­nif­i­cant de­vel­op­ment.

Firstly, what prompted the change of con­duc­tor in the 132kV grid line of state util­ity Odisha Power Trans­mis­sion Cor­po­ra­tion Ltd? In­dian Met­als & Ferro Al­loys Ltd (IMFA) re­placed its ex­ist­ing 550-amp ca­pac­ity con­duc­tor with an 800-amp ca­pac­ity High Tem­per­a­ture Low Sag (HTLS) in 132KV ICCL Grid Choud­war Grid trans­mis­sion line of Odisha Power Trans­mis­sion Cor­po­ra­tion Ltd thereby en­abling power trans­mis­sion up to 160 mw of power as against 110 mw ear­lier.

This type of re­place­ment of ex­ist­ing con­duc­tor by HTLS con­duc­tor has been done for the first time in the power sec­tor of Odisha. A 132kV con­duc­tor has a car­ry­ing max­i­mum load ca­pac­ity of 80 amps at op­ti­mal lev­els. Since IMFA will in­ject more than 100 mw, this change was needed. There are sev­eral mod­ern con­duc­tor tech­nolo­gies avail­able of late. Tell us about the ra­tio­nale of se­lect­ing HTLS tech­nol­ogy. be within the spec­i­fied safety limit of statu­tory Gov­ern­ment or­ga­ni­za­tion. Fur­ther it also de­pends on the weight of con­duc­tor that can with­stand by tow­ers. The ex­ist­ing trans­mis­sion lines which pass through the thickly pop­u­lated ar­eas in Odisha, can­not be re­placed by heavy tow­ers and con­duc­tors with higher sizes. In or­der to en­hance the power car­ry­ing ca­pac­ity of ex­ist­ing trans­mis­sion lines, wide re­search was un­der­taken and fi­nally HTLS con­duc­tor con­cep­tion was found out. Nor­mal pan­ther con­duc­tor can op­er­ate safely up to a max­i­mum tem­per­a­ture of 900ºC. But Casablanca con­duc­tor can op­er­ate safely up to 1800ºC. Also the max­i­mum sag that comes up in this type con­duc­tor is less than the per­mis­si­ble sag limit which qual­i­fies for safe ground clear­ance and there is no life risk to hu­man be­ings and an­i­mals pass­ing un­der the con­duc­tor.

Hence the HTLS con­duc­tor was ob­served to be a per­fect fit. At a volt­age level of 132kV, HTLS is the lat­est tech­nol­ogy; it changes at higher volt­age lev­els. We un­der­stand that this re­place­ment of con­ven­tional con­duc­tor by HTLS con­duc­tor is un­prece­dented in Odisha. Please elab­o­rate. No one has re­placed any 132KV pan­ther or ze­bra con­duc­tor so far in Odisha. Not even OPTCL in any of its sys­tems. This is the first of its kind in Odisha and OPTCL wanted IMFA to re­place the con­duc­tor. On one hand where many ven­dors failed to do so, IMFA through its elab­o­rate re­search could make this pos­si­ble. It is an eye open­ing event in the power sec­tor in Odisha.
