Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA), a fully integrated producer of ferro chrome, recently replaced an existing 550-amp capacity conductor in a 132kV grid line with an 800-amp capacity HTLS (high tension low sag) conductor thereby enabling much higher power transmission. Such replacement of conductor is believed to have been done for the first time in Odisha. Sanjeev Das, in an interaction with Venugopal Pillai, tells us more on this significant development.
Firstly, what prompted the change of conductor in the 132kV grid line of state utility Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd? Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) replaced its existing 550-amp capacity conductor with an 800-amp capacity High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) in 132KV ICCL Grid Choudwar Grid transmission line of Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd thereby enabling power transmission up to 160 mw of power as against 110 mw earlier.
This type of replacement of existing conductor by HTLS conductor has been done for the first time in the power sector of Odisha. A 132kV conductor has a carrying maximum load capacity of 80 amps at optimal levels. Since IMFA will inject more than 100 mw, this change was needed. There are several modern conductor technologies available of late. Tell us about the rationale of selecting HTLS technology. be within the specified safety limit of statutory Government organization. Further it also depends on the weight of conductor that can withstand by towers. The existing transmission lines which pass through the thickly populated areas in Odisha, cannot be replaced by heavy towers and conductors with higher sizes. In order to enhance the power carrying capacity of existing transmission lines, wide research was undertaken and finally HTLS conductor conception was found out. Normal panther conductor can operate safely up to a maximum temperature of 900ºC. But Casablanca conductor can operate safely up to 1800ºC. Also the maximum sag that comes up in this type conductor is less than the permissible sag limit which qualifies for safe ground clearance and there is no life risk to human beings and animals passing under the conductor.
Hence the HTLS conductor was observed to be a perfect fit. At a voltage level of 132kV, HTLS is the latest technology; it changes at higher voltage levels. We understand that this replacement of conventional conductor by HTLS conductor is unprecedented in Odisha. Please elaborate. No one has replaced any 132KV panther or zebra conductor so far in Odisha. Not even OPTCL in any of its systems. This is the first of its kind in Odisha and OPTCL wanted IMFA to replace the conductor. On one hand where many vendors failed to do so, IMFA through its elaborate research could make this possible.
