India needs incentive policy for effective reactive power compensation
We hear of terms like power factor correction, harmonics management, etc in the context of “power quality.” What is the impact of power quality on the overall efficiency in the power sector? Good power quality results in high reliability, and hence the developed countries have developed standards for ensuring that the power quality is good and is maintained throughout. In India, power quality is restricted to only power factor and harmonics, because, today, there are incentives and penalties associated with only these two phenomena. What is the awareness of consumers, especially industrial and commercial consumers, when it comes to power conditioning? The awareness of the consumers (both end-consumers and electricity utilities) is increasing, but it has still not reached a point wherein we could design for good power quality at the project stage itself. We look for remedies only when the problem manifests itself and in many cases only when the problem causes harm or loss to our system.
Organizations like BEE, FICCI, APQI are now holding road shows, seminars and conferences to increase awareness of the power quality issues – harmonics, in particular. Do you think incentives and penalties imposed by power utilities are effective? Yes, 100 per cent! Had it not been for the incentives, the capacitor market would have not been growing. And if had not been for the penalties for harmonics in a particular Indian state, active harmonic filter sales would not have peaked as had been witnessed in 2015.
