BHEL commissions two power projects
harat Heavy Electricals Ltd has announced the commissioning of a 270mw coal-based power project in Punjab. The unit has been commissioned at the upcoming 540 mw (2x270 mw) Goindwal Sahib coalfired thermal power project of GVK Power & Infra Ltd (GVKPIL), located in the city of Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran district, near Amritsar in Punjab.
The second unit of the same project is also expected to be commissioned shortly. For the same developer, earlier this fiscal, BHEL had commissioned four hydro sets of 82.5-mw each at Alaknanda hydropower project in Uttarakhand.
Thermal sets of 270-mw rating are an inhouse improvisation of 210/250-mw sets supplied earlier by BHEL, which today form the backbone of the Indian power sector and have been performing much above the national average as well as international benchmarks.
BBHEL has so far contracted 35 sets of 270 mw rating, out of which 10 sets have now been commissioned. BHEL’s scope of work in the Goindwal Sahib project envisaged design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of steam turbines, generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries and electricals, besides state-ofthe-art controls & instrumentation.
BHEL is currently executing electromechanical works for hydropower plants at Shahpurkandi (206 mw) and Mukerian (18 mw) in Punjab, the PSU engineering firm said in a release.
Tripura project: In an independent development, BHEL also commissioned a 101-mw gas-based combined cycle power plant on EPC basis in Tripura. The power plant has been commissioned at Monarchak, 66 km from Agartala city. The order for the advanced-class gas turbinebased 101-mw combined cycle power plant was placed on BHEL by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation. The gas turbine of 65.4-mw rating was earlier commissioned by BHEL in March 2015. With the commissioning of the 35.6-mw steam turbine, BHEL has now commissioned the 101-mw CCPP. The gas for the project is being supplied from the fields of ONGC. Due to infrastructure constraints in transporting over dimensional consignments, multimodal transportation was used by BHEL for ensuring safe transportation the equipment to the site. BHEL’s scope of work in the project included supply of gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine, generators and C&I, including plant civil work.
In the recent past, BHEL has contributed to capacity addition in the state of Tripura by commissioning two sets of 363-mw each at the gas-based OTPC Palatana project, totaling 726 mw.
