The electrical equipment sector and ancillary industries have good reason to cheer as the government has reiterated its commitment to step on the procurement drive. However, any compromise on quality will not be taken leniently. This will mean that while there is a booming market awaiting quality-conscious suppliers, those that willfully or otherwise skimp on the quality parameter will be severely dealt with. This was the biggest message for the electrical equipment industry emanating from keynote addresses by ministers and other dignitaries at the mega five-day power T&D event Elecrama 2016 that concluded in Bengaluru, on February 17, 2016.
Delivering Elecrama’s inaugural speech on February 13, 2016, Piyush Goyal, Minister for State for Power (Independent Charge), summed up the sentiment when he said, We are really looking at high quality products coming out of your industry.” Goyal said the government will soon begin large-scale procurement of distribution transformers and smart meters.
