New ini­tia­tive to boost Dig­i­tal In­dia pro­gramme

The Min­istry of Elec­tron­ics and IT (MeitY) plans to de­ploy a chief in­for­ma­tion tech­nol­ogy of­fi­cer (CITO) in the var­i­ous de­part­ments that come un­der the min­istries.

As per MeitY’s rul­ing, a CITO will be ap­pointed in 34 de­part­ments and min­istries. The of­fi­cer will be an­swer­able to the cur­rent IT sec­re­tary, Aruna Sun­darara­jan.

Fur­ther, to boost the gov­ern­ment’s Dig­i­tal In­dia pro­gramme, the min­istry has pro­posed to set up a Na­tional E-gov­er­nance Academy. A fund of US$ 74 mil­lion (` 5 bil­lion) will be set aside for this pur­pose.

To pro­mote e-gov­er­nance on a na­tional scale, the min­istry has pro­posed launch­ing a mo­bile app called Umang. This app will func­tion as a com­mon plat­form across In­dia for all gov­ern­ment related ser­vices.
