FICCI organised a delegation comprising companies from India to participate in Hannover Messe 2015, one of world's leading industrial and technology fair held annually in Hannover, Germany coinciding with the visit of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to Germany. On the sidelines of the fair, FICCI in partnership with Deutsche Messe and ZVEI (German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association) organised a seminar on “Smart Cities: the Urban Challenge”. Amitabh Kant, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) delivered the inaugural address at the seminar.
Kant said that development and improvement of urban infrastructure such as public transport, water supply, and waste management is a pre requisite to development of smart cities in India. He said that first we need to plan and lay proper infrastructure and then look at IT integration for efficient management of infrastructure services. He highlighted that there is a huge opportunity for relevant companies and solution providers to invest and contribute their knowledge, experience as well as value proposition in fostering the smart city development agenda. He exuded confidence in the efforts and determination of Indian Government to provide the right impetus and policy environment to take the smart city agenda forward.
