FICCI or­gan­ised a del­e­ga­tion com­pris­ing com­pa­nies from In­dia to par­tic­i­pate in Han­nover Messe 2015, one of world's lead­ing in­dus­trial and tech­nol­ogy fair held an­nu­ally in Han­nover, Ger­many co­in­cid­ing with the visit of Prime Min­is­ter, Naren­dra Modi to Ger­many. On the side­lines of the fair, FICCI in part­ner­ship with Deutsche Messe and ZVEI (Ger­man Elec­tri­cal and Elec­tronic Man­u­fac­tur­ers' As­so­ci­a­tion) or­gan­ised a sem­i­nar on “Smart Ci­ties: the Ur­ban Chal­lenge”. Amitabh Kant, Sec­re­tary, Depart­ment of In­dus­trial Pol­icy and Pro­mo­tion (DIPP) de­liv­ered the in­au­gu­ral ad­dress at the sem­i­nar.

Kant said that de­vel­op­ment and im­prove­ment of ur­ban in­fras­truc­ture such as pub­lic trans­port, wa­ter sup­ply, and waste man­age­ment is a pre req­ui­site to de­vel­op­ment of smart ci­ties in In­dia. He said that first we need to plan and lay proper in­fras­truc­ture and then look at IT in­te­gra­tion for ef­fi­cient man­age­ment of in­fras­truc­ture ser­vices. He high­lighted that there is a huge op­por­tu­nity for rel­e­vant com­pa­nies and so­lu­tion providers to in­vest and con­trib­ute their knowl­edge, ex­pe­ri­ence as well as value propo­si­tion in fos­ter­ing the smart city de­vel­op­ment agenda. He ex­uded con­fi­dence in the ef­forts and de­ter­mi­na­tion of In­dian Gov­ern­ment to pro­vide the right im­pe­tus and pol­icy en­vi­ron­ment to take the smart city agenda for­ward.

Dr. Sub­hash Chan­dra, Chair­man, Es­sel Group & Zee Net­work mod­er­ated a high-pow­ered panel dis­cus­sion on “Smart City and the Ur­ban Chal­lenge” that com­prised lead­ing ex­perts from In­dia and Ger­many of­fer­ing their ideas and so­lu­tions for smart city
