Roundtables organized as prelude to Bengal Global Business Summit 2018
The Government of West is organizing the 4th edition of Bengal Global Business Summit 2018 on January 16-17, 2018 in Kolkata. FICCI is the Summit Partner and KPMG is the Knowledge Partner. As a prelude to the Summit, Roundtables on Gems & Jewellery and Apparel & Textiles was organised in Mumbai on July 4, 2017.
Dr Amit Mitra, Minister-inCharge, Finance and Industry, Commerce & Enterprises Departments, Government of West Bengal; Rajiva Sinha, Additional Chief Secretary, Industry, Commerce & Enterprises Depts., Government of West Bengal and Vandana Yadav, MD, WBIDC, addressed the sessions. Gems & Jewellery Roundtable: West Bengal has a rich and continuing tradition of craftsmanship for handmade gold jewellery. Around 80% of skilled artisans and goldsmiths all over India are from West Bengal. The size of the sector in Bengal is estimated at Rs. 38000 crore in 2016-17 which is 11% of the national turnover. The Govt. targets to increase the share to 20% and make West Bengal the Gems & Jewellery hub of India. The Gems & Jewellery Roundtable was attended by prominent industry players/associations. Mehul Choksi, Chairman, Gitanjali Group; Sanjeev Agarwal, Chair, FICCI Gems &Jewellery Committee & CEO, Gitanjali Group; Mukesh Mehta, Chairman, Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA); Praveen Shankar Pandya, Chairman, Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council; Avinash Gupta, COA, All India Gems & Jewellery Trade Federation; Pankaj Parekh, West Bengal State President, IBJA and Ashok Bengani, President, Calcutta Gems and Jewellers Welfare Association, among others participated at the session. Apparel & Textiles Roundtable: Textiles accounts for around 9% of the State GDP. The State occupies prime position in production of knitwear garments, jute products and hosiery. Under Texpro Bengal, 12 Textiles Parks are coming up in the state in over 530 acres in 4 major categories - Apparel & Garments; Dyeing & Processing; Powerloom; Apparel & Technical Textiles. A mega Powerloom cluster with integrated facilities from spinning to weaving is being developed. The focus is on development of five subsectors: hosiery &innerwear, linen, workwear, technical textiles and textiles machinery. The Apparel & Textiles Roundtable was attended by prominent industry players/associations from the sector. Kishore Biyani, Group CEO, Future Group; Ashok G Rajani, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council; Rahul Mehta, President, Clothing Manufacturers' Association of India; V.D. Zope, Chairman, Textile Association of India; N.D. Mhatre, Director General, Indian Textile Accessories & Machinery Manufacturers' Association, Senior Representative of Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council among others participated at the session. Anil Buchasia, MD, Amrit Exports; Pradeep Arora, Secretary, Paridhan Garments Park Association and Sanjay Jhunjhunwala, Chairman & Director, Turtle, participated from Bengal.
