The first thing you will notice about the Sony Bravia KDL40HX850 is its screen. At first sight it looks edge-toedge, but on closer inspection you realise there is indeed a bezel, though covered by glass. So the picture is not edge-to-edge, though the screen is. But this works well with the overall monolithic design of this ultra-slim 40inch LED TV as it removes all lines near the screen.

When you switch on the TV for the first time there is a set-up guide that takes you through different settings like you would with a new phone. You will need a decently fast Internet connection—1Mbps is ideal—to access the apps, or the Internet.

In fact, this TV even has TrackId which identifies the songs you are listening to. Plus, you can Skype if you get one of their external cameras.

The picture is clear, and the blacks are good. The TV uses an X-Reality PRO Engine with the Motionflow XR 800, so your frame rates are almost double and you will hardly notice any drag. We tested with FullHD media files and were very impressed with the picture quality.

However, the 2D to 3D conversion was not all that great. Its third dimension was mostly in depth and there was hardly any visible outward throw even with the pricey active 3D glasses. Strangely, the actual 3D files that we had for testing would not play on the TV.

The best thing about the TV has to be its interface, which is transparent and comes over the image even as you are watching something. The remote is also very handy to navigate the interface and flip through the multiple source options.

We were also impressed by the sound. The S-Force Front Surround 3D actually adds to the viewing experience by giving you a full theatre effect. And while most other high-end TVs still have 20W output, this one has 30W which is a big plus.

The Bravia KDL-40HX850 is a good buy if you are looking for overall performance. It does everything that you would expect of a high-end LED, though it fails to awe you with any of the features.
