Being one of the most awaited phones this year, the Canvas HD from Micromax sold over 9,000 units online within 24 hours of its launch. These amazing numbers were achieved not because of any marketing gimmick, but the promise of high-end specs at a mid-segment price.
The third phablet from Micromax, the Canvas HD looks similar to its predecessors. A black frame dominates the sides of the display on the front with the back panel is white. The 5inch display has a rich 1280x720p resolution. It produced vibrant colours while watching videos and playing games. The touch response was impressive and we could quickly type over the onscreen QWERTY keypad. There are three touch keys that illuminate when the screen is active. However, this plastic phone is a fingerprint magnet and often slipped out of our hands.
The phone packs a punch as far as performance is concerned and is powered by a Mediatek quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and paired with 1GB RAM. We can say that the performance was at par with phablets that cost twice as much as this one. We could easily play heavy graphic games like
Shadowgun and it rendered full HD videos smoothly. This Android Jelly Bean phone also had no trouble handling multiple apps in the background. Browsing and downloading apps was easy too. Micromax has added some native apps like M!Live, M!Store and M!Zone.
Micromax has packed in an 8MP rear camera. But this is a sore point as the images were good but not up to the level of the high-end smartphones. It can also capture full HD videos, but again this isn’t one of the phone’s strong points. The sound out was loud and clear, enhancing the multimedia experience.
The battery output was surprisingly impressive and the 2000 mAh managed to last a day despite heavy usage.
BAG IT OR JUNK IT?
At half the price of any other quad-core phone, this is a good buy.
