Finding an alternative polling system

Governance Now - - BRIEFINGS -

Will the election system for the lok sabha and assemblies change? An allparty parliamentary panel is exploring various systems of elections other than the first-past-the-post (FPTP). Headed by the Congress’ Anand Sharma, the parliamentary standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice has come up with a questionnaire. it is accessible to all political parties and the election commission. The panel has sought views and alternative method of elections from them.

“Apprehensions are now being raised that in recent years the FPTP system is not the best suited system as is evident from the recent assembly elections in uttar Pradesh, where results have indicated that a party getting 39 percent vote share won 312 seats and parties getting 22 percent and 21 percent got only 47 and 19 seats respectively,” the questionnaire reads.
