The 35-year-old Tamil ac­tor and pro­ducer has a de­gree in com­merce. Pop­u­larly known as Sibi­raj, he started his ca­reer in act­ing in 2003 with the film stu­dent num­ber 1, which didn’t do well at the box of­fice. He has shared screen space in many movies with his fa­ther, ac­tor Sath­yaraj, who is known for his role as Kat­tappa in the blockbuster movie Baahubali. Sibi’s re­cent re­lease sathya, a crime thriller, is earn­ing him ac­co­lades from both the crit­ics and au­di­ences.

What role does an artist play in so­ci­ety?

The main role of an artist is to en­ter­tain peo­ple. How­ever, if the ac­tor also hap­pens to be a star then he does have some de­gree of so­cial re­spon­si­bil­ity as to what he/she con­veys in a film.

Did you face any prob­lem in the film in­dus­try, ini­tially?

com­par­isons with my fa­ther. How­ever, they started to fade af­ter my movies Naai­gal Jaaki­rathai and Sathya.

What brought you closer to the film in­dus­try?

I hail from a film fam­ily. Be­ing a pro­ducer has taught me many things the in­dus­try faces and has brought me closer.

Your most chal­leng­ing or favourite role so far?

The most chal­leng­ing role was for the movie Sathya. i played the role of an nri, which re­quired more style, at­ti­tude and so­phis­ti­ca­tion in my body lan­guage. i had to work more on it.

You are cur­rently work­ing on?

Movie Ranga, an ac­tion thriller shot mostly in Kash­mir.

en­joy your work and work pas­sion­ately with a pos­i­tive at­ti­tude.

Books you are read­ing at present?

Sapi­ens, rec­om­mended by [ac­tor] Ka­mal Haasan sir in a Tamil mag­a­zine.

Ma­jor chal­lenges that our coun­try is fac­ing?

in­tol­er­ance, lack of safety for women and chil­dren.

How does the so­cial and po­lit­i­cal cli­mate in In­dia im­pact your artis­tic/cre­ative ex­pres­sion?

At present, I don’t let that af­fect my choice of scripts.

What is your mes­sage to the youth of In­dia?

dream big, stay pos­i­tive, work hard and em­brace what comes.
