KAN­ISHKA RAM­CHAN­DANI and PRIYA CHAPHEKAR chat up with Mark Hamp­ton, Toni&Guy’s Hairmeetwardrobe Global Hair Am­bas­sador. Q What is your role in Toni&Guy? A I help the brand in­tro­duce new prod­ucts, fore­cast trends, launch the brand in coun­tries all over the world, in­ter­act with peo­ple and ex­plain to them what the brand is all about. Q Do you think the In­dian cus­tomer will re­late to the theme of hairmeetwardrobe? A The so­cial me­dia is re­ally ac­tive right now. Fash­ion is so much big­ger than it’s ever been. The econ­omy is chang­ing and peo­ple are get­ting more cre­ative. Ev­ery­one is in dif­fer­ent places, but glob­ally, as far as fash­ion is con­cerned, we’re all in the same place. You know the same celebri­ties that I know. Toni&Guy in­tends to make the In­dian con­sumers more aware about which hair­dos can com­ple­ment which kind of clothes, and help them build upon those looks by select­ing the right prod­ucts from Toni&Guy.

Q De­scribe your jour­ney with the brand.

A Toni&Guy ap­proached me about a year ago. I was then do­ing my own thing — shoot­ing for in­ter­na­tional fash­ion mag­a­zines, rep­re­sent­ing an agency world­wide and build­ing my ca­reer. Af­ter they ex­plained the brand to me, we de­vel­oped a kind of a per­sonal re­la­tion­ship, and they ap­pointed me as their Global Hair Am­bas­sador.

QDo

you plan on de­sign­ing any ex­clu­sive prod­ucts for In­dia?

A No, we won’t be bring­ing in any ex­clu­sive prod­ucts to In­dia. How­ever, we do cherry-pick spe­cific prod­ucts that we think you’ll en­joy more. These prod­ucts are based on shine, lux­ury

and wash and care ranges, and in­clude nour­ish­ing packs and heat pro­tec­tion mists.

Q Ac­cord­ing to you what is the best part about In­dian hair? And what is the worst?

A There’s not much cul­ture of colour­ing hair (bleach­ing etc.), which is very dam­ag­ing. The in­her­ently thick hair, use of oil treat­ments and the right type of weather and wa­ter helps hair growth. We have hard wa­ter in Lon­don, which makes the hair drier. You need to use the hair thick­ness to your ad­van­tage by know­ing how to con­trol it. Dress­ing the hair a lit­tle more, find­ing vari­a­tions to wear your hair up is a good idea.

Q Which is your favourite care and styling prod­uct?

A The Toni&Guy Heat Pro­tec­tion Mist, which is as good as a con­di­tioner in a mist for­mat. It adds shine to curls and keeps them light. I also like the mois­tur­is­ing shine spray from the Glam­our range.

Q What style tip would you give an av­er­age In­dian woman?

A Use the Toni&Guy Sea Salt Spray. Make a high pony­tail and braid the hair, hold it with an elas­tic and twist it around to add more def­i­ni­tion.

Q Of the three looks that you cre­ated at the launch, which was your favourite one? Why?

A They were all re­ally nice, but I par­tic­u­larly loved Soha’s look. The side-swept vin­tage waves were tricky at first, but fun to work on.
