LAUNCH PAD As smooth as it gets
KANISHKA RAMCHANDANI and PRIYA CHAPHEKAR chat up with Mark Hampton, Toni&Guy’s Hairmeetwardrobe Global Hair Ambassador. Q What is your role in Toni&Guy? A I help the brand introduce new products, forecast trends, launch the brand in countries all over the world, interact with people and explain to them what the brand is all about. Q Do you think the Indian customer will relate to the theme of hairmeetwardrobe? A The social media is really active right now. Fashion is so much bigger than it’s ever been. The economy is changing and people are getting more creative. Everyone is in different places, but globally, as far as fashion is concerned, we’re all in the same place. You know the same celebrities that I know. Toni&Guy intends to make the Indian consumers more aware about which hairdos can complement which kind of clothes, and help them build upon those looks by selecting the right products from Toni&Guy.
Q Describe your journey with the brand.
A Toni&Guy approached me about a year ago. I was then doing my own thing — shooting for international fashion magazines, representing an agency worldwide and building my career. After they explained the brand to me, we developed a kind of a personal relationship, and they appointed me as their Global Hair Ambassador.
you plan on designing any exclusive products for India?
A No, we won’t be bringing in any exclusive products to India. However, we do cherry-pick specific products that we think you’ll enjoy more. These products are based on shine, luxury
and wash and care ranges, and include nourishing packs and heat protection mists.
Q According to you what is the best part about Indian hair? And what is the worst?
A There’s not much culture of colouring hair (bleaching etc.), which is very damaging. The inherently thick hair, use of oil treatments and the right type of weather and water helps hair growth. We have hard water in London, which makes the hair drier. You need to use the hair thickness to your advantage by knowing how to control it. Dressing the hair a little more, finding variations to wear your hair up is a good idea.
Q Which is your favourite care and styling product?
A The Toni&Guy Heat Protection Mist, which is as good as a conditioner in a mist format. It adds shine to curls and keeps them light. I also like the moisturising shine spray from the Glamour range.
Q What style tip would you give an average Indian woman?
A Use the Toni&Guy Sea Salt Spray. Make a high ponytail and braid the hair, hold it with an elastic and twist it around to add more definition.
Q Of the three looks that you created at the launch, which was your favourite one? Why?
A They were all really nice, but I particularly loved Soha’s look. The side-swept vintage waves were tricky at first, but fun to work on.
