Saffron fever

Bright lips and brighter tips — we seem to glimpse a bit of orange wherever we go these days. SOHINI DEY discovers why it is the colour to fall for this season.

If you want to make a statement without piling on too much make-up on your face, go orange! Whether worn on the lips or the eyes, this citrus shade makes for a magnificent impact. Moreover, the wide range of colour available within the broad spectrum of orange ensures that there’s always a perfect shade meant just for your complexion.

Lips

A swipe of orange lip colour is an instant eye-catcher. The bright pop of colour is also surprisingly versatile and can work equally well for the day as well as night looks, with only minor variations. Line your lips with pencil — some shades of orange are likely to bleed — and fill in with your lipstick. Leave the rest of your face luminescent and mostly free of colour; a soft coral blush and loads of mascara will help accentuate the look. Those with dusky complexion are often discouraged from trying out bright shades, but over the last few seasons this adage has been proved a myth. Orange stands out against dark complexions and every dusky girl’s beauty kit must include the shade. However, instead of wearing a tangerine shade, opt for colours such as dark coral or burnt orange. If a neon shade is all you have, cover it with a bit of pigment.

Eyes

Orange eyes are unusual and striking and achieving the perfect look may take a little practice and the right colours. Prep your eye area, concealing all hints of blemishes or dark circles. Use an eye shadow brush to sweep on a layer of orange all over the eyelid — corals work best for day while a nighttime soireé is the best time to bring out a neon shade. Blend with a different shade of orange to create a fruity version of the classic smokey eye. Orange also works marvelously well with other colours; blend your favourite orange with a shade of fuchsia, blue or green for a head-turning look.
