Sandalwood, one of India’s oldest natural beauty ingredients, is derived from the fragrant wood of the sandalwood tree. Sandalwood paste is applied on the skin for its cooling, moisturising, toning and healing properties; it is also antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Different ingredients can be added to sandalwood paste to enhance its benefits: rose water for toning the skin; honey for nourishing, moisturising and softening the skin; ground almonds for exfoliation; saffron for lustrous skin; turmeric for healing; and Fuller’s Earth (multani mitti) for tightening pores, drawing out impurities and improving skin texture. A few drops of sandalwood oil may be added to a carrier oil for massaging onto the face.
