Avoid creamy or emollient products, whether it’s mineral oil, shea butter, essential oils or petrolatum (better known as petroleum jelly). Always look for products labelled ‘non-comedogenic’, as these will not clog your pores. Cleanser: Use a foaming cleanser with a stronger detergent, such as sodium trideceth or lauryl sulphate, to wash off excess oil. Sunscreen: While day moisturisers can be avoided, daily protection with sunscreen is mandatory. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, that’s oil-free and noncomedogenic. Night moisturiser: Opt for night time moisturisers which are water-based lotions or gels with ingredients like glycolic or salicylic acid. Products containing silicone-based emollients like dimethicone usually do not clog pores as they do not have the acne-exacerbating effects of heavy oils, so these can also be used.
