Time to say goodbye
Done-to-death trends better left behind in 2017
BOBS & LOBS
Bobs made a comeback this year and were particularly popular because of their convenient upkeep. Then came the longer version of it, the lob, which was popularised by the likes of the Kardashian sisters. Styled wavy or poker straight, it’s true that the cut looks great on almost anyone who tries it, but we feel that 2018 deserves a fresher trend to obsess over.
Braids have been around for ages and every year we get to witness something new around it. You can thank Daenerys Targaryen for its resurgence in 2016 and 2017. We witnessed a growing number of ‘wannabe Khaleesis’ trying to successfully and, most times, unsuccessfully sport the intricate braids worn by Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones. While this style looks great for wedding pictures, it’s extremely impractical for everyday life. And did we mention that it will leave you with a sore pair of arms and make you spend a fortune on bobby pins?
First there was ombré hair, and then came balayage, which does look quite stunning when done right. In the year 2017, balayage was quickly adopted by every known face in Hollywood as well as Bollywood, and became a crowd favourite. But all good things must come to end, and we feel that balayage has run out of time. A special shoutout to caramel balayage that screams ‘tame’—it’s time for newer hues.
‘Elegance’ is not the word that comes to mind where the topic of rainbow hair is concerned. A temporary beauty at its best, rainbow hair looks weird when it fades and frays your hair while it lasts. Yes, it makes the dreams of the 10-year-old inside you come true. But is it really a look you’d like to sport day after day? Also, keep in mind the upkeep, which is both time-consuming and expensive.
The trend that was initially kindled by Miley Cyrus became a raging hell-fire when Kylie Jenner decided to sport it. Consequently, we saw a number of Instagrammers and bloggers follow her lead, and soon enough social media was flooded with platinum blondes. Whether it’s a buzz cut or long flowy locks, platinum is a colour hard to carry off because of which it’s best if it stays in 2017.
ROSE GOLD HAIR
2017 saw hues of rose gold take over the fashion world. Fashionistas started going gaga over rose gold make-up, clothes, and accessories and, of course, hair. Highlights, ombré and a full head of the rose gold hue could be seen everywhere from the red carpet to the subways. There is absolutely no doubting the versatility of the colour but one has to put a stop to it somewhere. In our humble opinion, it is a trend that had run its course even before 2017 ends, simply because it’s been overdone.
