QI had thick dense hair but they are growing thinner with each passing day. Is it possible for hair to get thinner over the years? ~ Kaveri Awasthi
Yes, it is very possible for the hair to get thinner over the years due to various reasons. There can be hormonal imbalances during the menopausal years, leading to thinning of hair. Stress, thyroid imbalance, illness, nutritional deficiencies, hair damage due to heat tools and chemical treatments, dandruff and related problems can be the other causes for thinning of hair. Rather than frequent washing of the hair, it is the product one uses that can lead to hair loss. Harsh shampoos and using too much shampoo can be the cause. In hot and humid weather and for oily hair, the hair needs to be washed frequently, but one should use a mild herbal shampoo. Take less amount and dilute it with a little water before using. One application of shampoo should be enough, especially if one is washing the hair frequently. Apply non-oily herbal hair tonic on the scalp daily, using cotton wool and leave it on. Diet is very important. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean, curd, in your diet. After working out, one should take a shower and rinse the hair thoroughly with water. Even if you don’t use shampoo, rinsing helps to remove sweat deposits. However, one can use very little shampoo diluted with water while rinsing the hair. There is no harm in washing the hair daily, as long as one uses a mild shampoo and in less amount. Take one teaspoon for long hair and half teaspoon for short hair. A quick emergency treatment is to put a little eau de cologne on your brush and comb your hair. It absorbs oil and leaves your hair cleaner and fragrant. Or, add lemon juice in a mug of water and rinse your hair with it. QIs there any natural remedy to deal with over processed hair? ~ Prakriti Rai A Over processed hair leads to hair damage, with the hair becoming dry, brittle, fragile and weak. Discontinue the use of brushes for some time. Use a wide toothed comb with smooth edges, especially for wet hair. Hot oil therapy will help. Twice a week, heat one part of castor oil with two parts coconut oil. Apply on hair and on ends too. Cover the head with a hot towel. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. Avoid vigorous massage. Keep oil on overnight and wash the hair next day, using mild herbal shampoo. Avoid very hot water. To dry the hair, wrap the towel around the head and allow it to absorb excess water. Use natural ingredients to condition the hair regularly. Mix one teaspoon each of vinegar and honey with one egg. Massage the mixture lightly into the scalp. Wash hair after half an hour. Or, beat yogurt and egg together, to make a nourishing hair pack, which also adds body to the hair. Mix Banana and Avocado pulp together and add one tablespoon olive oil. Apply the mixture as a hair pack. Wash off after an hour.
