QI had thick dense hair but they are grow­ing thin­ner with each pass­ing day. Is it pos­si­ble for hair to get thin­ner over the years? ~ Kaveri Awasthi

Yes, it is very pos­si­ble for the hair to get thin­ner over the years due to var­i­ous rea­sons. There can be hor­monal im­bal­ances dur­ing the menopausal years, lead­ing to thin­ning of hair. Stress, thy­roid im­bal­ance, ill­ness, nu­tri­tional de­fi­cien­cies, hair dam­age due to heat tools and chem­i­cal treat­ments, dan­druff and re­lated prob­lems can be the other causes for thin­ning of hair. Rather than fre­quent wash­ing of the hair, it is the prod­uct one uses that can lead to hair loss. Harsh sham­poos and us­ing too much sham­poo can be the cause. In hot and hu­mid weather and for oily hair, the hair needs to be washed fre­quently, but one should use a mild herbal sham­poo. Take less amount and di­lute it with a lit­tle wa­ter be­fore us­ing. One ap­pli­ca­tion of sham­poo should be enough, es­pe­cially if one is wash­ing the hair fre­quently. Ap­ply non-oily herbal hair tonic on the scalp daily, us­ing cot­ton wool and leave it on. Diet is very im­por­tant. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and in­clude fresh fruits, sal­ads, leafy green veg­eta­bles, soy­abean, curd, in your diet. After working out, one should take a shower and rinse the hair thor­oughly with wa­ter. Even if you don’t use sham­poo, rins­ing helps to re­move sweat de­posits. How­ever, one can use very lit­tle sham­poo di­luted with wa­ter while rins­ing the hair. There is no harm in wash­ing the hair daily, as long as one uses a mild sham­poo and in less amount. Take one tea­spoon for long hair and half tea­spoon for short hair. A quick emer­gency treat­ment is to put a lit­tle eau de cologne on your brush and comb your hair. It ab­sorbs oil and leaves your hair cleaner and fra­grant. Or, add lemon juice in a mug of wa­ter and rinse your hair with it. QIs there any nat­u­ral rem­edy to deal with over pro­cessed hair? ~ Prakriti Rai A Over pro­cessed hair leads to hair dam­age, with the hair be­com­ing dry, brit­tle, frag­ile and weak. Dis­con­tinue the use of brushes for some time. Use a wide toothed comb with smooth edges, es­pe­cially for wet hair. Hot oil ther­apy will help. Twice a week, heat one part of cas­tor oil with two parts co­conut oil. Ap­ply on hair and on ends too. Cover the head with a hot towel. Keep it on for 5 min­utes. Re­peat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. Avoid vig­or­ous mas­sage. Keep oil on overnight and wash the hair next day, us­ing mild herbal sham­poo. Avoid very hot wa­ter. To dry the hair, wrap the towel around the head and al­low it to ab­sorb ex­cess wa­ter. Use nat­u­ral in­gre­di­ents to con­di­tion the hair reg­u­larly. Mix one tea­spoon each of vine­gar and honey with one egg. Mas­sage the mix­ture lightly into the scalp. Wash hair after half an hour. Or, beat yo­gurt and egg to­gether, to make a nour­ish­ing hair pack, which also adds body to the hair. Mix Banana and Av­o­cado pulp to­gether and add one ta­ble­spoon olive oil. Ap­ply the mix­ture as a hair pack. Wash off after an hour.
