“The only word Liz knows in Italian is Bulgari,” joked Richard Burton about Elizabeth Taylor once. And who can forget Taylor, dressed as the Goddess-Queen Cleopatra, sinuous golden snakes entwining shapely arms, seared into the memory of a whole generation? Bulgari, the makers of those selfsame serpents, have been associated with this timeless motif ever since. This year, the house turns 130, and celebrates it with the launch of a high jewellery collection inspired by the snake motif, a mainstay of the house. While each piece of the range is a standout, the new Serpenti watch, paved with diamonds and calibrated-cut onyx, is a modern update on the old designs. The new Serpenti pendants, cradling intense gemstones—rubelite, mandarin garnet (pictured), or emerald—are also derived from the house classics. The highlight, though, is the Ultimate Temptation Serpenti necklace. Seventy diamonds, set in a random mosaic and totalling 60 karats, follow the tail of the snake, which ends in an extraordinarily beautiful, 12.16-karat drop. Scaled and flexible, the Ultimate Temptation (and other pieces) were unveiled in Sydney last month.

Salvatore Ferragamo watches, prices upon request.
