Ini­tial re­search sug­gests that CBT may work by al­ter­ing cer­tain brain re­gions. One study found that af­ter nine weeks of CBT, peo­ple with so­cial anx­i­ety showed a de­crease in vol­ume and ac­tiv­ity in their amyg­dala, the brain area as­so­ci­ated with fear and emo­tions.
