‘NO ACCURATE DATA ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS’

-

NEW DELHI: The government has no accurate data on number of illegal immigrants in India but is taking steps to ensure they do not enter in large numbers, minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju told LS on Tuesday.

“The government has requested the state governments and UT administrations to setup Special Task Forces for detection, identification and interception of illegal immigrants,” Rijiju said, replying to a question by Leader of the Congress in the Lower House, Mallikarjun Kharge.

“Steps are being taken to ensure that we do not get uncontrolled influx of migrants…,” he said.

Asked by Kharge if the government had found such immigrants linked to “terrorist or anti-national activities”, Rijiju said it would not be correct to brand a group or a community like that.

The minister’ s response on the question of Rohingya refugees created a stir in the House after he said there was a “concentration camp of Rohingyas” in J&K. “This is not a detention camp… If you are relating this concentration camps in Germany, I am not referring to that… They have concentrated themselves there ,” Rijiju said.
