CABINET NOD TO SCRAPPING OF NODETENTION RULE IN SCHOOLS
NEWDELHI: States will soon be able to able to conduct exams for students of class 5 and 8 and detain them with the Union Cabinet approving a proposal on Wednesday for scrapping the ‘no-detention policy’, sources said.
Under the existing policy, students are promoted automatically to higher classes every year till the eighth grade.
According to a senior HRD official, the proposal was tabled in the cabinet meeting. Sources said the government will introduce a bill in the Parliament in this regard as it required amendment to the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
However, before detaining them students will get another opportunity top ass the exam and only if they fail in that exam they will be detained.
For instance, students of classes 5 to 8 who do not pass the examination in March will be given a chance in May or June.
