CABINET NOD TO SCRAPPING OF NODETENTIO­N RULE IN SCHOOLS

NEWDELHI: States will soon be able to able to conduct exams for students of class 5 and 8 and detain them with the Union Cabinet approving a proposal on Wednesday for scrapping the ‘no-detention policy’, sources said.

Under the existing policy, students are promoted automatica­lly to higher classes every year till the eighth grade.

According to a senior HRD official, the proposal was tabled in the cabinet meeting. Sources said the government will introduce a bill in the Parliament in this regard as it required amendment to the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

However, before detaining them students will get another opportunit­y top ass the exam and only if they fail in that exam they will be detained.

For instance, students of classes 5 to 8 who do not pass the examinatio­n in March will be given a chance in May or June.
