MOGA: Indian cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur Bhullar, 28, met chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh on Wednesday, and accepted the job of deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and ₹5 lakh reward, offered by the Punjab government.

State government had announced the reward and job after the middle-order batswoman made the country proud during the recently concluded Women’s World Cup in England with her smashing knock of 171 not out against Australia in the semi-finals, which stormed India into the finals.

Harmanpreet said that she has accepted the job offer and will first resign her railway job. “I will go to Mumbai in a day or two, only then can I confirm this officially,” she said. Her father said ,“Harm a np re et met Captain and accepted the rewards offered. I will be happy to see her in police uniform.”

Captain directed director general of police (DGP) Suresh Ar ora, who was also present during the meeting, to complete the formalities for Harmanpreet’s appointment and said that her training can be completed later. “I want to keep the young woman, currently working in the Union railways ministry, in Punjab. I will take up the issue of waiver of her employment bond with the railways ministry so that she can join Punjab Police at the earliest, while continuing to pursue her career as a cricketer,” Captain said.

Although the Mithali Raj-led team lost to England in the finals, the team caught attention of people due to their fighting spirit. Harmanpreet, vice-captain of the team, hit 51 runs in the finals, but could not steer India to a title win, as they fell short of the target by nine runs.
