After the Supreme Court passed the Shahbano judgment requiring Muslim men to pay maintenanc­e to ex-wives, Arif with the blessing of Rajiv Gandhi supported it. When the government changed its mind about the judgment, Arif resigned, ensuring that he would forever be regarded as a liberal Muslim who stood up against the mullas and his own party.
