A relatively undistinguished chief minister of Karnataka, Bommai’s name will live on because of a landmark Supreme Court judgment, arising out of his apparent loss of a majority in the Assembly. The court ruled that a majority could only be decided on the floor of the House and set guidelines for the imposition of President’s Rule.
