AMRITSAR : A day after assuming charge of director general of police (DGP), Punjab, Dinkar Gupta on Saturday said the Punjab Police have been successful in checking gansters to much extent, as very few gangsters are active in the state now.

Surrounded by his family members, he paid obeisance at the Golden Temple, holiest Sikh shrine. “I have come here to seek blessings of the Guru and pray for peace, brotherhood and prosperity of Punjab. I wish Punjab remains progressive,” he said after paying the respect.

Replying to a query regarding the concern of gangsters, Gupta said success rate of the operations launched by Punjab Police to counter the gangsters is very high. So far, the police have neutralised many dangerous gangsters, he said.

To prevent sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and holy scriptures of other religions, he said, measures are being taken to enhance safety of the worship places with the cooperation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) like religious bodies. He said the police were mulling to prepare a database of religious places.

Responding to a query on growing incidents of snatching and other crimes against the tourists in the holy city, the DGP said, “Nothing is more important for us than addressing this problem. We are also introducing tourism police for the safety of the tourists, given the temple is the largest Sikh shrine and Amritsar, an international city”.

Speaking on the issue of drugs, he said they have broken the chain of drug smugglers and reduced supply of drugs.
