FEROZEPUR: A day after 10 people were injured in a clash between Congress and BJP supporters in Ferozepur, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manminder Singh, 47, died after a heart attack on Saturday morning.

The SSP’s staff found him unconscious at 9am when he did not respond to calls. They rushed him to a private hospital, where he was put on ventilator before being declared dead at 11.30am.

Manminder Singh, who was posted to Ferozepur four months ago, was recruited as an inspector in 1993. He served as the Mansa and Batala SSP. His family, comprising his wife and two children, is based in Jalandhar.

HECTIC DAY DUE TO CLASH

Manminder Singh had a hectic Friday, quelling a clash between the supporters of Congress legislator Parminder Singh Pinki and BJP workers opposed to his setting up an open gymnasium at a municipal committee park. The police used tear-gas shells, chilli grenades and water cannons to disperse the workers of both parties. Four policemen, who suffered head injuries while controlling the situation, were admitted to the civil hospital.

Manminder denied the Congress charge of the police siding with the BJP. He said had the police not taken timely action, the protest would have led to loss of property and lives. “The guilty will be taken to task. No one will be allowed to disturb law and order,” the SSP had said.
