No­tice sent to Gee­lani over il­le­gal pos­ses­sion of $10k

The En­force­ment Direc­torate (ED) on Thurs­day is­sued a show cause no­tice to Tehreek-eHur­riyat leader Syed Ali Shah Gee­lani, for al­leged il­le­gal ac­qui­si­tion and pos­ses­sion of for­eign cur­rency to the tune of $10,000. In a state­ment ED said its case re­lates to “recovery and seizure of $ 10,000 by In­come Tax from the res­i­dence of Syed Ali Shah Gee­lani in Sri­na­gar. “Fol­low­ing in­puts from In­come Tax (I-T), Syed Ali Shah Gee­lani was asked to ap­pear in re­sponse to the sum­mons is­sued un­der FEMA but he did not ap­pear. His coun­sel submitted a writ­ten re­ply and de­nied the recovery of for­eign cur­rency from his res­i­dence,” the state­ment said.The state­ment added that fol­low­ing fur­ther sum­mons Gee­lani’s char­tered ac­coun­tant submitted the ap­peal doc­u­ments con­firm­ing the recovery and seizure of for­eign cur­rency.
