FARMERS ON TRACKS FOR DEBT WAIVER, 26 TRAINS AFFECTED
MANAWALA (AMRITSAR): Upping the ante against the Congress government on the crop debt waiver promise, hundreds of farmers blocked the AmritsarDelhi rail route by sitting on dharna on the tracks at Manawala, 15 km from Amritsar, on Friday, for nearly five hour starting 1.30pm, under the banner of Kisan Sangharsh Committee (KSC). It ended after the DCassured the farmers of a meeting with CM on October 16. Due to the blockade, 26 trains were affected, including nine that were announced as cancelled, including Shaheed Express to Jaynagar (Bihar), Chhattisgarh Express to Bilaspur, Chandigarh Intercity, Howrah Express, Golden Temple Mail to Mumbai, Dehradun Express, Bathinda-Jammu Tawi Express, Ferozepur-Ludhiana Sutlej Express, and FerozepurMumbai Punjab Mail. Harpreet Singh, spokesperson of the farmers, said, “We did not want to harass anyone, but government is turning a deaf ear to our demands.” Cancellation of some trains was later withdrawn, but details were not known immediately.
