FARM­ERS ON TRACKS FOR DEBT WAIVER, 26 TRAINS AF­FECTED

MANAWALA (AMRITSAR): Up­ping the ante against the Congress gov­ern­ment on the crop debt waiver prom­ise, hun­dreds of farm­ers blocked the Am­rit­sarDelhi rail route by sit­ting on dharna on the tracks at Manawala, 15 km from Amritsar, on Fri­day, for nearly five hour start­ing 1.30pm, un­der the ban­ner of Kisan Sang­harsh Com­mit­tee (KSC). It ended af­ter the DCas­sured the farm­ers of a meet­ing with CM on Oc­to­ber 16. Due to the block­ade, 26 trains were af­fected, in­clud­ing nine that were an­nounced as can­celled, in­clud­ing Sha­heed Ex­press to Jay­na­gar (Bi­har), Ch­hat­tis­garh Ex­press to Bi­laspur, Chandigarh In­ter­city, Howrah Ex­press, Golden Tem­ple Mail to Mum­bai, Dehradun Ex­press, Bathinda-Jammu Tawi Ex­press, Ferozepur-Lud­hi­ana Sut­lej Ex­press, and Ferozepur­Mum­bai Pun­jab Mail. Harpreet Singh, spokesper­son of the farm­ers, said, “We did not want to ha­rass any­one, but gov­ern­ment is turn­ing a deaf ear to our de­mands.” Can­cel­la­tion of some trains was later with­drawn, but de­tails were not known im­me­di­ately.
