Did you know that Priyanka Chopra once sat inside her van and cried endlessly right before shooting a scene? This happened when director Anurag Basu was waiting to can the first shot for Barfi! As the film turns 5, Anurag Basu shares many more special memories attached to the film and its making.

“I usually start with the toughest shot so I know what triggered PC’s reaction but then it came out so well,” says Anurag. “We had so much fun. I remember playing cricket and our adda sessions before shooting every day,” he sounds nostalgic. Upon being coaxed into sharing more such incidents and capers with us, Anurag remembers how shooting in a small town in Coimbatore district, that had no proper hotels, the actors, made to stay at a proper five-star in Coimbatore, came back to stay with him and the crew at the one of the local hotels.

Parts of the film were also shot guerilla style, in Kolkata. Basu reminisces getting PC and Ranbir to shoot a scene at the heavily-crowded flower market under the Howrah Bridge. He, cheekily, goes on to reveal how the entire crew, including Ranbir Kapoor, was treated to bhang before shooting on Holi, and predictably, no one in the crew remembers shooting. This was the scene where Ranbir Kapoor gets arrested and Ileana goes to meet Saurabh Shukla. Anurag adds that Barfi! will always remain close to his heart.
