AMRITSAR: THE CITY AND ITS REALTY
The religious and spiritual capital of Punjab, Amritsar city, houses the Golden Temple, and is known for its food and culture. It gets the highest number of non-resident Indian (NRI) visits in a year than any other city in India. The 2011 Indian census reported the population of the city to be over 1,159,227. In addition to tourism, carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts, service trades and light engineering are the major commercial activities in the city. The city is also known for its unique food and culture. Its proximity to Pakistan border and Lahore (30 km) in Pakistan makes it the frontier post for international trading and commercial activity with the neighbouring country.
