AM­RIT­SAR: THE CITY AND ITS REALTY

The re­li­gious and spir­i­tual cap­i­tal of Pun­jab, Am­rit­sar city, houses the Golden Tem­ple, and is known for its food and cul­ture. It gets the high­est num­ber of non-res­i­dent In­dian (NRI) vis­its in a year than any other city in In­dia. The 2011 In­dian cen­sus re­ported the pop­u­la­tion of the city to be over 1,159,227. In ad­di­tion to tourism, carpets and fab­rics, farm pro­duce, hand­i­crafts, ser­vice trades and light engi­neer­ing are the ma­jor com­mer­cial ac­tiv­i­ties in the city. The city is also known for its unique food and cul­ture. Its prox­im­ity to Pak­istan bor­der and Lahore (30 km) in Pak­istan makes it the fron­tier post for in­ter­na­tional trad­ing and com­mer­cial ac­tiv­ity with the neigh­bour­ing coun­try.
