Number of illegal colonies has increased over the years. In the 2014 policy, the number stood at 5,340, with application received for regularisation of colonies at 6,404.
In 2018, the number of applications received under previous policies is 6,662.
While the current government estimates peg the number of illegal colonies at around 8,000, according to the Punjab Colonisers and Property Dealers Association, there are more than 20,000 illegal colonies in the state.
While the April 2018 and new policy stated that 2,565 colonies were regularised under previous policies, the latest data available on the housing department web-portal and from local government department show a different picture.
As per housing department, only 200 colonies are listed as regularised under previous policies (excluding area coming under Greater Mohali Area Development Authority).
As per local government department, 700 colonies were regularised .
