Num­ber of il­le­gal colonies has in­creased over the years. In the 2014 pol­icy, the num­ber stood at 5,340, with ap­pli­ca­tion re­ceived for reg­u­lar­i­sa­tion of colonies at 6,404.

In 2018, the num­ber of ap­pli­ca­tions re­ceived un­der pre­vi­ous poli­cies is 6,662.

While the cur­rent gov­ern­ment es­ti­mates peg the num­ber of il­le­gal colonies at around 8,000, ac­cord­ing to the Pun­jab Colonis­ers and Prop­erty Deal­ers As­so­ci­a­tion, there are more than 20,000 il­le­gal colonies in the state.

While the April 2018 and new pol­icy stated that 2,565 colonies were reg­u­larised un­der pre­vi­ous poli­cies, the lat­est data avail­able on the hous­ing depart­ment web-por­tal and from lo­cal gov­ern­ment depart­ment show a dif­fer­ent pic­ture.

As per hous­ing depart­ment, only 200 colonies are listed as reg­u­larised un­der pre­vi­ous poli­cies (ex­clud­ing area com­ing un­der Greater Mo­hali Area De­vel­op­ment Au­thor­ity).

As per lo­cal gov­ern­ment depart­ment, 700 colonies were reg­u­larised .
