Town’s status affects development work

The controversy over the status of the town, whether it is a municipal corporation or a council, considerably hampered development work. The state government elevated the town’s status from a council to a corporation in March 2010, but the decision was later quashed by the high court in October 2010. On November 4, 2010, the state reinstated the council status of the town. Later in August this year, the state government approached the Supreme Court, which stayed the high court order and ordered an expeditious hearing on the appeal. The town was again given the status of a municipal corporation in August. But as the councillors were already elected to the municipal council, there was no meeting of the corporation.
