UT to set up server for Sukhna sanctuary
■ CHANDIGARH: The Department of Forests, UT, will be launching the first departmental server that would contain the database of ecological features of the Sukhna Forest Sanctuary.
It may serve as a ready reckoner for wildlife researchers and those responsible for management of the sanctuary. The ministry of environment and forests is funding the project that costs about Rs 10 lakh.
The database is being digitised under the assistance of the Centre for Computational Engineering, PEC, Chandigarh.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE DATABASE WILL BE THE DETAILS OF WHEN AND WHERE A PARTICULAR SPECIES WAS SPOTTED IN THE SANCTUARY
Santosh Kumar, principal chief conservator of forests, Chandigarh, said the most important feature of the database would be the details of when and where a particular animal species was spotted in the sanctuary.
"Besides, behavioural analysis of various species would help in ascertaining the reasons responsible for their decline and surge at particular pockets of the sanctuary," Kumar added.
He said the server would contain the year-wise performance and maintenance fact sheet of the 125 silt-retention dams of the sanctuary. Besides, it would contain the year-wise detail of location and frequency of the fire incidents occurred in the sanctuary in last few decades.
Kumar further said information on numerous historical facts would also be uploaded on the department's website.
