PANCHKULA: The Panchkula police claimed to have busted a gang of vehicle lifters and recovered 27 vehicles from their possession on Tuesday.

Shamsher Singh, a resident of New Delhi, who was staying at Parteek Hotel in Morni, complained on June 8, 2009, that his Indigo car was stolen. An FIR under section 379 of the IPC was registered at the Chandimandir police station.

On May 16 this year, ASI Surjit Singh of Crime Investigation Agency, Panchkula, got a tipoff that Sher Singh, a resident of Kurukshetra, who was allegedly an important member of vehicle-lifter gang, was driving the stolen Indigo car of Shamsher Singh with a fake number plate.

The ASI along with constables Sanjeev Kumar, Sukh Chain Singh and Subash Chand raided and arrested Sher Singh from Sector 11 here on May 16.

During investigation, Sher Singh allegedly disclosed that he along with his partners Ashish Chaudhary, a resident of Kaithal, and Neeraj alias Babloo, a resident of Karnal, had received many stolen cars from Ramu alias Ram Niwas, a resident of Jind district, and have sold them further. Ashish and Neeraj were arrested on May 24.

According to the police, Ramu has his own gang to steal vehicles from Punjab, Haryana, Panchkula, Chandigarh and Delhi and after tampering their engine and chassis numbers and affixing fake number plates, the vehicles were sold further. Sher Singh also allegedly confessed that he along with Ashish and Neeraj had sold 27 vehicles in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.

Both Ramu and Sher Singh have a criminal record. As per the police press statement, further investigation in the case was under progress and there was a possibility of solving of many cases of same nature. Police said Ramu would be arrested soon.

Two of the alleged thieves in police custody, and (below) the vehicles recovered so far, in Panchkula on Tuesday.
