SOME PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS
Rainwater harvesting can be a solution, believes Prof Alok Srivastava from PU. Having worked on water-related issues for the past two decades, he opines, “A simple rain harvesting scheme having 50% efficiency and using 100 sq metres of rooftop of a typical house in Chandigarh, which is known to have an average rainfall of 1,000 mm, could yield sufficient water for family of five for a year.”
Although the MC has spent Rs 15 crore for supplying of tertiary, treated water to houses of 1 kanal and above in sectors 31 to 48, it did not find takers for connections. Even the MC’s horticulture department is not using tertiary water in several sectors for maintenance of parks.
