The police have also initiated the process of filling the nine vacancies of deputy superintendent of police (DSP). Of the nine, four are to be filled by officers from outside cadres.

According to the data available, the UT police sent a list of 680 cops in line of promotion to the home department, and 480 have been cleared.

The UT IGP made the announcement during a meeting on Tuesday. A senior police officer said the names have been cleared as per the Punjab Police Rules (applicable to UT), which provide for promotion of 75% cops on the basis of seniority.

The remaining would be promoted on the basis of a test. Most of the constables have been working on the same posts for over two decades.
