Un­der the 11th Plan, the mod­erni­sa­tion of Nehru Hospi­tal and re­search blocks is be­ing done and a new 250-bed hospi­tal, in­clud­ing a 90-bed can­cer block is be­ing set up. Rs 515 crore for the planned bud­get and an­other Rs 370 crore was sanc­tioned un­der the OBC Reser­va­tion Ex­pan­sion Plan. Ren­o­va­tion of res­i­den­tial com­plex and hos­tels was also done. Apart from that, un­der the 11th Plan, phase 2 of the Ad­vanced Eye Cen­tre and Ad­vanced Car­diac Cen­tre was to be con­structed Work on the Rs 200-crore 250-bed ex­pan­sion of Nehru Hospi­tal has al­ready started. Es­ti­mated con­struc­tion cost of the build­ing is Rs 112 crore.

The 90-bed cen­tre for can­cer will be a boon for the re­gion, where can­cer has be­come a ma­jor prob­lem. At present, the in­sti­tute has just 24 beds for the treat­ment of pa­tients suf­fer­ing from can­cer. As per data from the PGI’s depart­ment of ra­dio­ther­apy, the in­sti­tute gets around 6,000 new cases of can­cer ev­ery year. And ev­ery year, around 60,000 pa­tients come for fol­low-up treat­ment
