Western Com­mand holds sum­mer camp in Manali

CHANDI­GARH: Chandi­mandirbased Western Army Com­mand has or­gan­ised a sum­mer ad­ven­ture camp for chil­dren at Palchan, Manali.

The camp is be­ing con­ducted in two age groups for six days each — the first one for chil­dren be­tween 9 to 13 years of age from May 29 to June 3 and the sec­ond from June 9 to 14 for chil­dren be­tween 14-17 years of age.

As many as 165 chil­dren be­tween the age of 9 to 13 years from all Army can­ton­ments of Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Jammu, Pathankot, Yol, Chandi­garh, Ambala, Meerut and Delhi are par­tic­i­pat­ing in the camp. Sim­i­larly, an­other 165 will con­gre­gate at Manali on June 8 as the sec­ond group.

Be­sides get­ting a whole­some ex­pe­ri­ence of out­door liv­ing, these chil­dren will take part in a lot of ad­ven­ture, sports and cul­ture ac­tiv­i­ties. Ad­ven­ture ac­tiv­i­ties in­clude trekking, rock climb­ing, paraglid­ing, river raft­ing, zorb­ing, zip-line and moun­tain bik­ing.

The chil­dren will be­gin their day with yoga and phys­i­cal train­ing, in­clud­ing un­armed combat such as karate and kung fu. Both groups will be di­vided into four houses each. To in­cul­cate a sense of pa­tri­o­tism in chil­dren, these houses will bear the names of young Kargil war mar­tyrs — Param Vir Chakra awardees Cap­tain Manoj Kumar Pandey and Cap­tain Vikram Ba­tra, Maha Vir Chakra awardee Cap­tain Anuj Nay­yar and Vir Chakra awardee Cap­tain Vi­jayant Tha­par.

The chil­dren will com­plete in var­i­ous in­ter-house sports com­pe­ti­tions such as bas­ket­ball and vol­ley­ball and cul­tural ac­tiv­i­ties such as tal­ent hunt, dance, mu­sic and drama, out­door cook­ing and bivouac pitch­ing.

Fa­cil­i­ties for screen­ing of movies have also been made at the camp.
