Western Command holds summer camp in Manali
CHANDIGARH: Chandimandirbased Western Army Command has organised a summer adventure camp for children at Palchan, Manali.
The camp is being conducted in two age groups for six days each — the first one for children between 9 to 13 years of age from May 29 to June 3 and the second from June 9 to 14 for children between 14-17 years of age.
As many as 165 children between the age of 9 to 13 years from all Army cantonments of Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Jammu, Pathankot, Yol, Chandigarh, Ambala, Meerut and Delhi are participating in the camp. Similarly, another 165 will congregate at Manali on June 8 as the second group.
Besides getting a wholesome experience of outdoor living, these children will take part in a lot of adventure, sports and culture activities. Adventure activities include trekking, rock climbing, paragliding, river rafting, zorbing, zip-line and mountain biking.
The children will begin their day with yoga and physical training, including unarmed combat such as karate and kung fu. Both groups will be divided into four houses each. To inculcate a sense of patriotism in children, these houses will bear the names of young Kargil war martyrs — Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey and Captain Vikram Batra, Maha Vir Chakra awardee Captain Anuj Nayyar and Vir Chakra awardee Captain Vijayant Thapar.
The children will complete in various inter-house sports competitions such as basketball and volleyball and cultural activities such as talent hunt, dance, music and drama, outdoor cooking and bivouac pitching.
Facilities for screening of movies have also been made at the camp.
