PGI to hold walkathon on World Heart Day

As part of golden ju­bilee cel­e­bra­tions and pro­mot­ing healthy life­style in the city, School of Pub­lic Health in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Na­tional In­sti­tute of Nurs­ing Ed­u­ca­tion of the Post Grad­u­ate In­sti­tute of Med­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion and Re­search (PGIMER) are go­ing to cel­e­brate World Heart Day on Satur­day by or­gan­is­ing a Walkathon from the PGI to Sukhna Lake with the theme “One World, One Home, One Heart”.

About 200 fac­ulty mem­bers, res­i­dent doc­tors, nurses and other staff are expected to par­tic­i­pate in the event.

A PGIMER re­lease re­vealed that car­dio­vas­cu­lar dis­eases (CVDs) ac­counted to 2.25 mil­lion deaths in 2010 and pro­jected to reach 2.94 deaths in 2015. In 2004, CVDs was the lead­ing cause of death in In­dia lead­ing to 1.46 mil­lion deaths in fact caus­ing around 130 deaths per 100,000 pop­u­la­tion.

“It is es­ti­mated that 1.9 mil­lion deaths are at­trib­ut­able to low lev­els of phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity. Heart dis­ease is ac­tu­ally the num­ber one killer of women, caus­ing one in three fe­male deaths, about one death per minute glob­ally,” reads the state­ment is­sued by the PGIMER.
