PGI to hold walkathon on World Heart Day
As part of golden jubilee celebrations and promoting healthy lifestyle in the city, School of Public Health in collaboration with the National Institute of Nursing Education of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) are going to celebrate World Heart Day on Saturday by organising a Walkathon from the PGI to Sukhna Lake with the theme “One World, One Home, One Heart”.
About 200 faculty members, resident doctors, nurses and other staff are expected to participate in the event.
A PGIMER release revealed that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) accounted to 2.25 million deaths in 2010 and projected to reach 2.94 deaths in 2015. In 2004, CVDs was the leading cause of death in India leading to 1.46 million deaths in fact causing around 130 deaths per 100,000 population.
“It is estimated that 1.9 million deaths are attributable to low levels of physical activity. Heart disease is actually the number one killer of women, causing one in three female deaths, about one death per minute globally,” reads the statement issued by the PGIMER.
