AM­BALA: Ad­di­tional dis­trict and ses­sions judge RC Dimri on Satur­day awarded five years’ rig­or­ous im­pris­on­ment to a busi­ness­man, who was also trea­surer of a lo­cal school, for abet­ment to sui­cide of its woman prin­ci­pal.

Ra­jni, prin­ci­pal of Radha Lal Vidya Mandir school in Am­bala city, had com­mit­ted sui­cide on March 7, 2007, by jump­ing be­fore a train.

A sui­cide note re­cov­ered af­ter her death had blamed a busi­ness­man Vinod Ku­mar, who was also school trea­surer, for her ex­treme step as he con­stantly ha­rassed her. The vic­tim also said that she was forced to re­sign and was un­der great men­tal ten­sion due to his be­hav­iour. Af­ter her hus­band Ra­jin­der Ku­mar lodged a po­lice com­plaint, Vinod was booked un­der Sec­tion 306 of IPC.

The coun­sel for the com­plainant said that 16 wit­nesses were ex­am­ined dur­ing the trial.
