In­spec­tor sui­cide: wife, in-laws get 3-year jail

SAS NA­GAR: A lo­cal court on Satur­day awarded three-year im­pris­on­ment to a woman and her par­ents for driv­ing her hus­band, an in­spec­tor with Pun­jab po­lice, to sui­cide in 2008.

Those con­victed in­cluded Harpreet Kaur, her fa­ther Av­tar Singh and mother Si­tal Kaur. The court also im­posed fine of Rs 2,000 on each con­victs.

In­spec­tor Par­min­der Singh Dhillon (40) had con­sumed some poi­sonous sub­stance on Au­gust 4, 2008. He was posted with vig­i­lance bureau at the time of his death.

Po­lice had reg­is­tered a case un­der Sec­tion 306 of the IPC against the three ac­cused on the state­ment of his fa­ther Pri­tam Singh of Bhorla vil­lage near Sam­rala. The com­plainant had al­leged that Par­min­der was ha­rassed by his wife and in-laws.

Po­lice said that Par­min­der, who was stay­ing with his wife and in-laws in Phase XI, had an ar­gu­ment with his wife a day be­fore his death. He went out and was later found ly­ing near a rail­ways plat­form on Au­gust 4 morn­ing. Po­lice had re­cov­ered his tur­ban, socks and shoes ly­ing a lit­tle dis­tance away from the body apart from a bro­ken beer bot­tle and empty packet of celphos tablets.

Dhillon had an in­ter-caste love mar­riage in 1995. His wife was a school­teacher. Dhillon had re­mained SHO of Phase 11 po­lice sta­tion be­fore his stint with VB.
